David enters the Fire Kingdom and events shift from bad to worse. He learns a shocking truth about the dragons, a truth destined to block his efforts to retrieve the lost magic of Shaylar from the ruling Council. After a cave-in and injuries force a rescue, David finds himself more isolated than before as personal concerns scatter his trusted advisors and the wizard who led him there abandons him. The head of the dragon Council negotiates separate deals with both David and his father, sowing further discord between them. David's close friend, Lothan, disappears into the caves and doesn't return. A group of dissidents kidnap Wilks, the child empath David is sworn to protect. With no options left, he accepts the Council's demands to help them in their centuries-old conflict, risking a war which might kill them all. Even if David manages to win, there's no guarantee the dragons will let him leave the region alive. They don't want the Kingdom of Shaylar to rise again and will stop at nothing to see it remain a pile of dust.

A Dragon’s Lament is the second of a projected six novels in River Fairchild’s fantasy series, Jewels of Chandra. I greatly enjoyed reading the first novel, Diamonds and Dust, and looked forward to the publication of this book. It turned out to be another page-turning read.Chandra is a world that once had five kingdoms. One of them, Shaylar, ceased to exist as a kingdom many years ago. The highborn, including the thanes and the nobility, possess magic. The lowborn don’t. Many of them, chafing under the rule of the thanes, hope for the restoration of the kingdom.
David Alexander, who fell into Chandra from earth, is an heir to the throne of Shaylar. So is his father, John. In A Dragon’s Lament David, who is in his middle twenties, leads a party of nine characters, including John, into the Fire Kingdom. They seek the return of the magic the four other kingdoms stole when Shaylar fell.
Since dragons rule the Fire Kingdom, David and his followers face one crisis after the other. They become involved in a struggle between the ruling dragons and a shadowy group of dissidents. Human slaves are another part of the mix in the Fire Kingdom.
In the first two novels in her Jewels of Chandra series, River Fairchild has constructed a compelling world in which humans regularly cross paths with wizards, empaths, satyrs and now dragons and shape-shifters.
I enjoyed my second visit to Chandra as much as I did the first. I can’t say too much about one of the new characters, Alanyth, without including spoilers in this review, but I can report she is a welcome addition to the Jewels of Chandra. I look forward to reading the subsequent novels in this series.

A Dragon Lament Jewels of Chandra Volume 2 River Fairchild 9781499118544 Books Reviews
I devoured the prequel and the first book (Diamonds and dust) in this series. I am a dragon tragic so I expected to be enthralled. And I was.
In unexpected ways.
The tension between our hero David Alexander and his father John (both heirs to the lost kingdom of Shaylar) increase. As do the dangers and difficulties they face. And dragons are just part of it...
More please. And soon.
Second in the Jewels of Chandra series, A Dragon’s Lament blends fascinating characters, strange creatures, and a low-key spirituality into a tale of adventure, action and romance.
Though the books are best read in the right order, it wouldn’t be hard to pick up A Dragon’s Lament as a standalone novel. Each story tells a new segment of David’s journey with his band of friends (loyal and otherwise), through strange lands, strange peoples, and deepening mystery. Well-timed backstories provides ample reminders of what went before, and the wealth of fascinating characters soon differentiate themselves into an enticing cast, from low-born to high, human to dragon, and magical to mundane. Heroic David tries to stay true to himself, while his father favors success over loyalty in the quest to claim a kingdom and its jewels.
Wise lessons grow naturally from the characters’ fates and beliefs. “All I can do is try to live my life each day as if it counts,” says one, when a crisis of faith propels more mystery and suspense. But this novel broadens in scope as it follows a second story arc, simultaneous with the first. One tale set in a human citadel, and the other in the Fire Kingdom of dragons; both offer fascinating revelations, adding depth and history to the world as adventures progress. And these dragons prove both as slippery and as loyal as any other human, or non-human friend.
Epic fantasy, beautifully plotted and pleasingly told, these books are fun and, best of all, they’re each complete in their own way, despite being part of an ongoing story.
Disclosure I was lucky enough to be given a free ecopy of this one and I offer my honest review.
I'm a dragon fanatic and there are certainly lots of dragons in this book. As it turns out, a lot of them are not very nice dragons though. David has some really loyal and wonderful friends whom he met in the first book and he has to fulfil a prophecy to raise the kingdom of Shaylar once again but to do so he has to find the magic which was stolen from the original kingdom. A good read.
A blast of cold hits David and his friends as they enter the Fire Kingdom. The heat comes with the dragons and their politics, as dangerous as the wizards on the Far Isle. The dragon Council is wrestling with a group of clever dissidents and sticks David in the middle of the conflict to earn the magic that he is seeking. Along with the dragons, David must contend with his father and his missing friends. If he survives the battle, there's no guarantee he'll find the magic he needs to help revive the Kingdom of Shaylar.
If you thought the first book in this epic fantasy series was amazing, you'll be blown away by this second installment. Magnificent worldbuilding and characterization. The dragons are fascinating creatures. I'm a sucker for twisted politics. Lies upon lies, yanked around in circles and unexpected turns, not knowing who to trust. Then the layers are peeled back to reveal the rich and shocking tale beneath.
I love seeing the characters we know struggle and grow. The harmony and animosity amongst David and his group. I also like the new additions, especially the priestess. I can't wait to read more of their adventures!
