This short dark fantasy story by young adult author Janni Lee Simner originally appeared in Bruce Coville's Book of Nightmares, published by Scholastic Inc.
"Andrew knew that the moon had stolen his parents away.
"He tried to explain to Elizabeth once, after the funeral, but she didn’t understand. Her face turned horribly pale, and she whispered, “They’re dead, Andrew. Don’t you know that?” And then, just in case he didn’t, she drew him a picture. She used her red pencils, and some of Andrew’s crayons, besides. She used rusty-red for the brick buildings, brownish-red for the mugger’s jacket, rosy-red for Mom’s torn sweater on the sidewalk. And bright red for Dad, where the knife had gone through his chest.
"Andrew tore the drawing up—not because looking at it sent icy shivers up his spine, though it did—but because she’d gotten the drawing all wrong. She’d left out the moon, large and round in the night sky, and that was the most important part."

I love Janni Lee Simner's full length books, but this short story was a bit lackluster. It moved slowly for me and halfway through I'd already figured out the ending. I'd like to say that it's because I'm a super genius, but I'm afraid that's not the case. It's a good a good space filler if you're having to wait somewhere for a half hour or so. But it's not something I'd go out of my way to recommend to people.Product details

A story which straddles the line between fantasy and horror, and adult and child fiction. Everyone says that Andrew's parents died, but Andrew knows better. The moon stole them, and he is going to get them back. No matter the sacrifice.
An interesting inversion on what a parent will do for their child. When you are your child's whole world, what would they do to get their world back?
This would probably make a good Halloween-time tale for your little one, but perhaps not too little. And not those prone to anxiety. No sense risking them becoming paranoid about parent deaths and the predatory moon.
